November is predictable for the hard frosts and the leaves have fallen from most of our deciduous trees. The structural beauty of our trees is now in view. I like to consider the bark structure and texture of trees we use in our landscape design. Start to study these for your landscape. What is un-predictable is what weather we will have starting at Thanksgiving Day weekend. I have experienced ice storms and snow on that weekend and being the start of winter. This shuts down all outdoor construction. Have also experienced sunny, mild temperatures for the whole month of November and December. One year we laid sod along a new swimming pool the first week in January! Enjoy your Thanksgiving with family and friends.
The air is crisp, we are wearing layers of clothing while being outdoors hiking and working in our gardens. It is one of my favorite times of the year, as long as it not rainy.
My best prediction for best fall colors in the Berkshires is the 2nd week of October. In 2018 the fall colors seemed dull here but in Northern Michigan they were spectacular, while we were in Traverse City, Michigan and Leelanau County.
So enjoy your last days of decent outdoor weather. This is an excellent time to plan any projects for spring 2020!
New swimming pool that was started fall 2018 and finished for the 2019 Memorial Day weekend for a young family in South Berkshire County. Designed to accommodate large family gatherings, this 18’ x 50’ pool has a bench seat along the entire length (to the left side of image). Automatic pool cover keeps the pool clean of most debris and saves energy.
Richmond Farm, Richmond, MA is a property we created a master plan for in 2010 for the owners. From the MPlan a number of projects have been implemented in collaboration with the owners…
July is when all our favorite summer entertainment opens: Tanglewood Jacob’s Pillow Berkshire Theatre Festival Barrington Stage Mahaiwe Theater Williamstown Theater Festival Time to schedule dates with your friends and family and take a picnic to Tanglewood and enjoy one of the most beautiful public campuses around. My favorite places at Tanglewood include (we always use the Lion’s Gate entrance): Pre-concert picnics and sippin’ at the south lawn, which has a special view of Stockbridge Bowl and the Berkshire Mountains. Great play lawn for kids also. Don’t miss the Hemlock maze off the south lawn. The great lawn to listen […]

Hopefully the snow and ice are gone…last March 2018 the largest snowstorm of the year occurred the last week of March and snow continued into the first week of April!
March 20, 2019 was the first day of spring and the anticipation of early spring flowers is in the air and migrating birds are returning.

Master Plan for new modern second home on 80 acres in Columbia County, NY for a family of 5 with many friends… Focus was on the immediate house and how to insert a large-family pool near the house with a southern exposure. Extensive grading required to create a level landing for the pool and a 60′ x 120′ play lawn next to the pool. A 12′ cut in grade was required. Excess material was used on site to create a new upper sports field and soften the slope of the septic field. Complicated underground utilities. Had to relocate ALL existing […]
This is our design for the new main entrance to the Norman Rockwell Museum. The main entrance is about 25 years old, which faces north has seen some fierce winters. As a result it has deteriorated rapidly due mostly to extensive salt damage. We were commissioned to design this new terrace since our firm designed and installed a similar terrace at The Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield. That terrace system has been operating for 16 years.
